Southerly 110

Flying Cloud has the Tall Fractional Rig and Self Tacking Jib option as well as the larger 40HP engine which is unusual - important for ease of handling and endurance

Manufacturer Provided Description

  • The Southerly 110 with her aft cockpit, plumb bow line and twin rudder configuration, combined with her sail plan, makes her a fast, fun and exhilarating yacht to sail. Lewmar direct steering, combined with the twin rudder arrangement gives instantly responsive steering, making helming this yacht a real pleasure. Even when the wind increases and gusts attempt to push her off course, the hull form and deep draft of the Swing Keel enables her to stand up to the wind and carry her canvas, whilst the twin rudders give exceptional directional stability and control. In fact, the Southerly 110 is so light on the helm she will sail herself most of the time.
  • The tall fractional rig and self tacking jib allows you to enjoy your sailing with minimum effort. The self tacking jib means you can tack spontaneously, without effort, allowing you to sail in conditions that a conventional sail plan may not allow, such as in a harbour or congested area.
  • The unique Swing Keel provides deep draft performance (deeper than most yachts), for powerful windward performance. At the 'touch of a button' the keel can be raised to just 2'4'' for shallow draft freedom, allowing you to sail in coastal areas and inland waters. As with all Southerly’s, the yacht will also dry out and sit upright.
  • As you go onboard, the Southerly 110's traditional quality of build shines through. Good all round views, a spacious saloon, open galley, raised chart table and large aft cabin are particular features on this yacht.
  • Designed by Rob Humphreys and Southerly in-House Design Office.
  • Northshore commissioned Rob Humphreys with a brief to embody the established features of the Southerly range, which have proved popular over many years, in a hull and rig incorporating his latest design thinking. The result sets very high standards of performance, versatility and sheer good looks which appeals to family and cruising yachtsmen alike. Her aft cockpit, plumb bow line and twin rudder configuration, combined with her impressive sail plan makes her a fun, fast and exhilarating yacht to sail.

Owners Statement

  • My wife and I have had seven cruisers in the last 40 years. Flying cloud, our much loved Southerly 110, was built for us in late 2009 and has been inspirational.
  • We wanted a comfortable, fast cruiser, easily handled by the two of us which would take the ground and allow us to cruise Brittany, Scillies, and other drying harbours (South Coast and Holland - very shallow seas) She has delivered in spades.
    • Our specification was aimed at speed, endurance and comfort.
    • Tall rig - Fully battened main 19% bigger than the standard main
    • Gennaker for downwind work (from 60º off the wind)
    • Bigger 40HP engine to push on in tough conditions
    • Feathering MaxProp to reduce drag
    • Extra battery and Rutland wind charger for all the electronics and self steering
    • Good windlass and extra chain for a lot of anchoring
    • The twin rudders deliver tracking like no-other boat we have sailed
She has always been meticulously maintained. Six months ashore every winter with heaters to keep her sweet. The 40HP engine is very well balanced by the larger than standard feathering MaxProp. Full service history available for engine, liferaft etc.
  • Reason for Sale: We are retiring from cruising due to anno domini and health issues
  • PS: Flying Cloud is named after the American Clipper ship Flying Cloud, which was co-owned by my great, great grandfather. She set the sailing record from New York to San Francisco (via Cape Horn) in 1851 which she held for over 100 years.
